‘The Avengers’ Hammers ‘Battleship’ and ‘The Dictator’ on Way to Box-Office 3-Peat
By Hevan BarbedNo Comments"The Avengers" is heading for a box-office three-peat and another $50 million from U.S. moviegoers.
Disney and Marvel's star-studded superhero mashup took in $15.3 million Friday, leaving in its wake newcomers "Battleship," "The Dictator" and "What to Expect When You're Expecting."
That, along with another $13.9 million from overseas, pumped the worldwide gross for "The Avengers" to $1.1 billion, $417.3 million from the U.S. and $682.6 million from overseas.
Universal's board game-inspired aliens-at-sea saga brought in just $9 million Friday from 3,690 locations, putting it on pace for a softer than hoped-for $25 million weekend. Analysts outsides the studio thought the pricey action epic might have hit $40 million.
White it has taken in $220 million overseas, the soggy U.S. bow almost certainly torpedoes any franchise hopes the studio harbored.

Paramount's "The Dictator," which opened Wednesday, added an estimated $5.5 million Friday. That pencils out to $18 million for the weekend and a $23 million five-day opening for the Sacha Baron Cohen spoof.
And Lionsgate's "What to Expect When You're Expecting" delivered around $4.4 million Friday, which projects to $12 million for the weekend.
Warner Bros.' holdover "Dark Shadows" took in $3.8 million from 3,755 locations in its second week.
Earlier …
The Avengers" will face its toughest competition to date this weekend as Universal's "Battleship" steams into cineplexes along with Lionsgate's "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and Paramount's "The Dictator," which opened Wednesday.
Bet on the superheroes, analysts say, predicting Disney's star-studded Marvel mashup will retain its box office crown and take in another $50 million to $56 million in its third week, with "Battleship" projected at between $40 million and $47 million.
"The Avengers" might even overtake the final "Harry Potter" film for No. 3 on the list of all-time worldwide moneymakers this week. Disney says it has taken in $1.04 billion globally, $395.8 million of that from the U.S., and a whopping $658.1 million from 52 foreign countries. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" is No. 3 on the all-time list with $1.3 billion, behind only 2009's "Avatar" and 2007's "Titanic."
"Battleship" enters with some impressive foreign box office credentials of its own, having brought in more than $220 million over the past five weeks. While Universal's strategy of releasing the film overseas well before its domestic bow has worked to a degree, the toughest test will come this weekend at the U.S. box office. It will play at 3,690 locations.

"What Universal did with the overseas was a good play," Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told TheWrap Thursday. "At one point, this film was being talked about in the same breath as 'Waterworld,' so they've come a long way in terms of countering negative buzz."
With its $209 million production costs and marketing on top of that, the stakes are high for a film the studio sees as having franchise potential. "Battleship" has made over $60 million more at the foreign box office than Hasbro's last non-sequel film, "GI Joe," which was considered successful enough to spawn this summer's sequel.
Peter Berg ('Hancock') produced with Scott Stuber and directs the action epic based on the classic Hasbro board game — with an extra-terrestrial twist — in which a naval fleet battles an invading alien armada, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and Brooklyn Decker star.
"Battleship" is the first movie based on a board game since the forgettable "Clue" in 1985, but a handful are on the way. Universal has scaled back the budget on "Ouija" but still plans a 2013 release. "Risk" and "Candyland" projects are in development at Sony.
Paramount's "The Dictator" got off to a solid start, taking in $4.2 million from its 3,003 locations on Wednesday. That puts Sacha Baron Cohen's spoof on a pace to take in around $25 million for the five-day stretch.
Also read: 'The Dictator' Review: Laughs Keep Sacha Baron Cohen's Shaky Regime Afloat
That would put the film behind the bows of "Borat," which opened to $26.4 million in 2006, and "Bruno," which debuted with $30.6 million in 2009. Both topped the box office in their first week.
Cohen's relentless promotional efforts will help, but how much is unclear.
"This is a tough sell," Boxoffice.com editor Phil Contrino told TheWrap Thursday, "even tougher than 'Bruno.' He got people's attention, but we'll see if the film delivers."
Early audiences gave the film a so-so CinemaScore rating of C, but the critics were more positive. On Thursday, it had a 60 rating on the Metacritic web site and a 63% favorable number on RottenTomatoes.com.
The film also opens in 29 foreign territories as well this weekend, and that's where it could find its most success. "I think it's going to be one of the bigger comedies of the year overseas," Bock said.
The projection for Lionsgate's ensemble romantic comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is around $15 million. Directed by Kirk Jones, the movie stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Dennis Quaid and Chris Rock.

It's the summer's second movie based on a self-help book, coming on the heels of "Think Like a Man."
"This is smart counter-programming," Contrino told TheWrap. "There are only so many explosion extravaganzas guys can take their girlfriends to, so there's definitely room in the market for this film, and it could stick around for a while."

Another film targeting a female audience is "Hysteria," a period comedy from Sony Pictures Classics. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonathan Pryce, and Hugh Dancy star in the film based on the story of how Dr. Mortimer Granville invented the vibrator.
"Dark Shadows" is back for its second week after opening in the No. 2 spot with $29.6 million. Warners is hopeful its core audience, women over 25, will give the film some legs.

Ain’t no party like a Bill Murray dance party? Vulture had a front row seat at Cannes: “At the request of [Moonrise Kingdom co-star Jared] Gilman, who just had his bar mitzvah and has a taste for dub-step, Bill Murray led the troop onto the dance floor, where the four kids and their accompanying man-child wiggled and jumped around with abandon. It was a scene of such next-level adorability that nearly everyone in the immediate vicinity pulled out a camera phone. ‘We’re just chilling! We’re just chilling!’ Murray shouted out as he put the kibosh on each video in turn. Then he’d go back to more happy wriggling to songs like ‘I’m So Excited.’” [Vulture]

CW Redeveloping ‘Hunger Games’-Like ‘Selection’; ‘Deadman’ Not Dead
By Hevan BarbedNo CommentsThe CW is redeveloping "The Selection," a "Hunger Games"-like series that it passed on for the 2012-13 season — and the network continues to develop a series about the D.C. comics hero Deadman, network president Mark Pedowitz said Thursday.
Pedowitz spoke to reporters after the network unveiled its 2012-13 lineup to advertisers, including another drama based on a D.C. comics hero, the gritty "Arrow." He said he planned to meet with the producers of "The Selection," based on the book by Kiera Cass, to discuss it. He said it was too soon to say whether the show will be recast. "Friday Night Lights" star Aimee Teegarden had been cast in the lead.

Like "The Hunger Games," is about a young girl in a futuristic, war-torn nation who is chosen by lottery to compete for fame and fortune against a backdrop of hunger and carnage. Unlike the "Hunger Games"' Katniss Everdeen, the girl at the center of "The Selection" is competing for the affections of a prince, not killing other teenagers.
"Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke, who also created NBC's upcoming "Revolution," is developing the Deadman series.

The closing bell has sounded on Facebook's first day as a public company, and the result could safely be characterized as "meh."
The social network gets the honor of being the biggest debut for a technology company in U.S. stock market history, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg's brainchild enjoyed only a fractional gain on its initial public offering price of $38 a share.

The site's stock closed the day up 23 cents, or 0.6 percent to $38.23. It slipped from that perch in after-market trading.
Facebook opened trading at roughly $42 a share, but continued to slip as the hours ticked by in what was a tough climate for social media stock. Zynga, Pandora, and LinkedIn all closed the day down from the start of trading on Friday.
Despite sputtering on during its NASDAQ coming out, Facebook is still expected to raise between $16 billion and $18 billion from IPO. Moreover, its valuation is now pegged at north of $100 billion.
Facebook's public debut is the third largest IPO in U.S. history, behind the $19.7 billion raised by Visa in 2008 and the $18.1 billion generated by General Motors in 2010, according to Reuters.

"Wild Oats" is billed as a cross between "Sideways" and "Thelma and Louise." In the film, two senior citizens (MacLaine and Weaver) take off for Las Vegas after an accounting error gives them a $1 million social security windfall. The good times are cut short, however, and they soon find themselves as fugitives from justice.

More than any other artist, Donna Summer, who lost her battle with cancer Thursday morning, defined the era of disco and dance-pop.
Although she still charted hits as late as 2008, her infectious beats and alluring voice that blasted through the club scene in the late '70s/early '80s influenced recording stars from Madonna to Britney Spears.

Here’s a sampling of some of the greatest hits from LaDonna Adrian Gaines, the Queen of Disco.
Sampled by the likes of Madonna, Whitney Houston and David Guetta, “I Feel Love” was Summers’ second top 10 single:
“Love to Love You Baby” was vintage Summer — erotic, suggestive and beloved in the gay club community. Here’s the 17-minute version of her first top 10 single (for those with some time to kill):
Summer performing “On the Radio” in 1983. She recorded it in 1979 for what was otherwise a greatest hits record.
She worked hard for her money, hard for her money. This '80s classic was also the name of her album, which received a Grammy nomination.
In concert in 1978, Summer struts her “Last Dance.” A fitting end (in spite of that sparkly dress).
‘Glee’ Update: Find Out Who’s Staying, Who’s Leaving ‘Glee’ After Graduation
By Hevan BarbedComments OffFiled under: Cambio News
The Glee graduation, and season three finale “Goodbye,” is fast approaching–and there have been plenty of questions surrounding who’s leaving Glee and who will return next season.
Fresh off their Nationals win, Glee‘s New Directions senior members are preparing for graduation in what is sure to be a tear jerker of a season finale.
Glee cast members have been stirring up plenty of rumors about who will stick around on the series for season four, and while there’s been buzz that Dianna Agron and Amber Riley are leaving, that may not be exactly the case.
It’s the end of an era, no doubt, but Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith are confirmed to return next season.
But it looks like the other grads will be popping up in Glee season four as well, as show creator Ryan Murphy spilled the beans to Vulture.com about who is staying on Glee.
Ryan explains, “We had a meeting, and you know we’ve become like a family, and I said to them, ‘Anybody who wants to stay on the show will stay on the show.’ They’re all coming back. Anyone who is a regular is coming back. Everyone said yes.”
Check out this emotional behind-the-scenes video from the graduation finale, where Dianna Agron says, “It’s been four years together. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I mean these are some of my best friends. We’ve gone through some of the most incredible things together. We’ve just been on this insane journey… I’ll remember this forever.”
Sniffle.

Lea Michele and Cory Monteith Kiss: ‘Glee’ Couple Packs on PDA at Hockey Game

Lea Michele and Cory Monteith dating rumors are a thing of the past–after the couple’s kiss earlier this week at a hockey game, we’d say things are definitely heating up.
Lea and Cory kissed during the Rangers/Devils hockey game at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday and, of course, a camera snapped their romantic PDA moment.

Lea tweeted: “Let’s go Rangers!!” that day (though her cheering didn’t help–the Rangers lost). Lea and Cory were also spotted holding hands while out shopping in NYC the same day.
They make such a cute couple–it’s nice to see them finally taking their real-life romance public. Looks like their couple’s mash-up name can now be put into full swing: Monchele.

Taylor Swift Donates $4 Million to Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
By Hevan BarbedComments Off
Six-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift is paying forward her success with a hefty $4 million donation to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The funds will build the Taylor Swift Education Center, a 7,500-square-foot education and exhibit space that MTV reports should be ready by 2014.

This is the first of TheWrap's daily roundups of news 'n' notes from the 2012 Cannes Film Festival …
The 65th installment of Cannes kicked off on Wednesday – and if there's little chance of equaling the widespread acclaim directed at the 64th festival, hope springs eternal on the Croisette from filmmakers and distributors hoping for a launch like the one "The Artist" got last year, or at least a couple of good reviews and a small bidding war.
The opening-night film, though, doesn't need a buyer: Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" is set to be released by Focus Features, which is also screening it for stateside critics on the same day it debuts in the South of France.
Also read: Cannes 2012: It's a Man's World (But at Least That Man Isn't Lars von Trier)
The film stars Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis and Edward Norton – and according to an interview with Anderson in the Hollywood Reporter, "it's a romance between two 12-year-olds in 1965." (Newbie actors Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play the kids in question.)
Anderson says he's honored to be included in the main competition at Cannes, particularly since the film's marketing plan was always based on a Cannes launch. As for the opening-night pressure, he's far more matter-of-fact about it than last year's opening-night director, Woody Allen, who described the event as a hellish night of red carpets he didn't look forward to walking, photos he'd rather weren't taken and ovations he'd just as soon not receive.
"I don't really have to do anything," says Anderson. "As far as I'm told I have to walk up the staircase and then sit and watch the movie."
Also read: Cannes Will Be Speaking English This Year: David Cronenberg, Lee Daniels, Andrew Dominik…
According to Xan Brooks at the Guardian, though, that staircase isn't what is used to be. In a piece about the snobbishness of Cannes, he interviews Eve Jackson, the culture editor at the French news site France 24. The stairs outside the Palais, Jackson insists, were recently rebuilt: "They made them even steeper. This was to give the impression that the guests are ascending to movie heaven."
If it's heaven, Anne Thompson suggests that Harvey Weinstein is this year's god – or, to use less lofty and more secular language, the festival's biggest power player. "The French have never more adored the indie powerhouse, who scored five Oscars for 'The Artist' last year, including Best Picture and Actor," she wrote.
This year, she adds, the Weinstein Company is already dominating the festival, having acquired John Hillcoat's "Lawless" (right), Andrew Dominik's "Killing Me Softly," Dustin Hoffman's "Quartet" and Wayne Blair's "The Sapphires," with its eyes (and pocketbook) set on James Gray's "Low Life" as well.
Meanwhile, Thompson's former indieWIRE colleague Eugene Hernandez, now at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, sets himself a task: "If I could catch only ten of the 70+ new feature films screening over the next two weeks in France, which ones would I watch?" He skips the Cronenberg and the Dominik and the Resnais, and goes for Wes Anderson, Walter Salles, Michel Gondry and this top five: "Post Tenebras Lux" (Carlos Reygadas), "Reality" (Matteo Garrone), "The Paperboy" (Lee Daniels), "Mekong Hotel" (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) and "Laurence Anyways" (Xavier Dolan).
And if some of those films prove to be eminently worthy but get passed when it comes time for Nanni Moretti's jury to hand out awards, In Contention's Guy Lodge has a consoling slideshow: "Top 10 Cannes Film Festival Losers." By this he means great films that left the Croisette empty-handed.
Also read: Carlos Diegues to Chair Caméra d’Or Jury at Cannes
The list includes Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing," Lars von Trier's "Dogville," Luis Bunuel's "The Exterminating Angel," Curtis Hanson's "L.A. Confidential," Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious" and Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge!" The most egregiously overlooked film of all? Lodge says it's Krszyztof Kieslowski's "Three Colors: Red."
Finally, as the worldwide press descends upon Cannes, it's always fun to see Jeff Wells complain. Wells, whose gripes about locale and wi-fi and such are always a staple and sometimes a highlight of his film-festival coverage, gives a blow-by-blow description of his trip from Germany. The only snafu is that he went straight from the bus depot to the Palais to pick up his credential, only to learn that they wouldn't let him into the Palais with his luggage. I've never been to Cannes – why do I know that they don't allow luggage into the Palais, and longtime visitor Jeff doesn't?

Cannes 2012: Paul Schrader To Write Kremlin-Financed Russian Ballerina Drama
By Hevan BarbedComments OffPaul Schrader, writer of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” has signed to write a drama about Mathilde Kschessinska, a famed Russian ballerina and mistress to the last Russian tsar, in a ground-breaking project backed by the Kremlin.
Producers David American producers David Weisman and Anatoly Davydov announced the project at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.
The film will be financed by the V. Vinokur Fund for the Support of Russian Culture & Arts under the auspices of the Kremlin, and is an unusual collaboration between a renowned American screenwriter and a Russian-backed production.
The film will be shot in English with a mixed Russian and American cast.
Kschessinska played mistress to at least four aristocratic men who controlled the crumbling Romanov dynasty, including Russia’s last Tsar, Nicholas II. Rising from poverty, through her extraordinary gift for ballet, Kschessinska lived a life of luxury on the cusp of the Russian revolution.
“Kschessinska’s life is a powerful metaphor for Russian culture and evokes the best of Russian arts,” said Schrader. “She was a first native prima ballerina in the country that saw the highest achievement in that art form. She was not only a witness to the critical period of Russian history, she was a player in that history, only to be thrown aside.”
Said Weisman: “Kschessinska was worshipped and reviled,” said Weisman. “Nicknames such as ‘Black-eyed She-Devil of the Imperial Ballet’ and ‘Mathilde the Magnificent’ echo the seething jealousy and boundless admiration Kschessinska provoked during her time. Having narrowly escaped the Bolshevik bloodbath, for fifty years she taught ballet in Paris where she died only a few months before her hundredth birthday, in 1971.”
Schrader is the legendary writer of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.” His directing credits include “American Gigolo” and “Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters.”

Cross Creek will control domestic distribution through its deal with Universal Pictures. Exclusive Media will hold its international rights.
The first film under this long-term agreement will be “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” a thriller starring Liam Neeson as an unlicensed private detective hired to find the kidnapped wife of a drug dealer. Scott Frank, who wrote and directed "The Lookout" starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, will do the same for this project.

Trayvon Martin Autopsy Report Released; Family Slams “Strategic” Leaks in George Zimmerman Case
By Hevan BarbedComments OffThe attorney for Trayvon Martin’s family claims there have been strategic leaks of records in the case intended to benefit defendant George Zimmerman.
Attorney Benjamin Crump said on Wednesday he wants “full transparency” in the case, and called for all the police files on the subject to be released.
After several news outlets were given access to a sealed medical examiner’s report on Martin and a police report on Zimmerman, Crump was incensed.
“It was leaked for a beneficial purpose, certainly to help George Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense,” he said. “This report needs to be vetted with a keen eye.”
“Look at this in the full context. George Zimmerman made the decision to get out of his car, profile Trayvon Martin, pursue Trayvon Martin and confront him.”
According to NBC News, the autopsy on the slain 17-year-old says that Martin was killed by a single “penetrating gunshot wound to the chest” Feb. 26.
Meanwhile, medical records leaked to ABC News showed Zimmerman likely suffered a broken nose, black eyes and was bleeding from the back of head.

Sacha Baron Cohen brought his "Dictator" roadshow to the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, proving that the law of diminishing returns is just as applicable in Wadiya and in the South of France as it is in the United States.
First, Baron Cohen's character from "The Dictator," General Aladeen, was "sighted" on a yacht in the harbor cavorting with a bikini-clad woman while some "armed guards" stood by.

The most shocking thing about the episode/photo-op, which ended when the woman went below deck with Aladeen's "bodyguards," who then dumped a "body bag" overboard, is the identity of the female companion.
According to the Mail Online, it was model Elisabetta Canalis, who presumably got a little more respect (and a lot more attention) when she hung out with George Clooney.
Then Aladeen showed up with his camel and snarled traffic on the Croisette. The highlight, from all reports, came when he fell off the camel.
All of this comes as "The Dictator" lands in theaters, where reviewers have been relatively kind but box-office prospects do not appear terribly sunny.
"It's a good thing the gags work, because this slight comedy … can barely be bothered with actual storytelling," wrote Alonso Duralde at TheWrap.

Then again, who needs storytelling when you’ve got publicity stunts? So we saw Baron Cohen attend the Oscars in full costume, and "spill" an urn containing the "ashes" of "Kim Jong Il" on Ryan Seacrest.
And we saw him "torture" Martin Scorsese on "Saturday Night Live," and "threaten" Matt Lauer's family on "The Today Show," and make anti-American cracks on every American television show that would have him.
And now he's taken the roadshow to France – where they hardly mind a few anti-American comments, where the Cannes organizers have even less of a sense of humor than the Oscar brass, and where genuine protests were stirred up two years ago by the film "Outside the Law," which dealt with French-Algerian tensions.

In his brief sojourn down the Croisette, reported the Telegraph, "General Aladeen" also stopped at a café and ordered two coffees – one for the camel, who didn't drink it. Then he went to a Ralph Lauren store and bought a scarf – again, for the camel.
"The Dictator," by the way, is not screening in the festival.
Baron Cohen made a previous appearance at Cannes in 2006, when he promoted his movie "Borat" by strutting down the beach in a lime-green mankini.
At least that one was funny, in a horrifying kind of way.
